These experiences can help you explore healthcare careers, learn from experienced professionals, and build practical knowledge in a real-world environment. 

Availability varies, so these positions are not listed on our careers website. Below is an outline of the process for finding an internship or shadow opportunity across most departments. 

How to Find an Internship or Shadow Opportunity at Brown University Health

Follow our suggested steps:

1. Explore Areas of Interest

Start by researching the department or specialty that interests you. Visit our Centers and Services directory to learn more about our programs and to find department contact information.

2. Contact the Department Directly

Reach out to the department where you would like to intern or shadow. Explain your areas of interest and whether you are seeking a shadow experience (up to eight hours) or an unpaid internship. If possible, ask to speak with a clinical manager or practice manager. Be prepared to discuss any education, certifications, or training programs you are currently completing.

3. Connect with a Brown Health Clinician

To move forward, a Brown Health clinician must agree to sponsor your shadow or internship experience. Once a clinician agrees, they will begin the approval process with Human Resources.

4. Complete the Human Resources Review Process

Human Resources will work directly with the sponsoring clinician to determine the information and documentation required for your experience. Requirements may vary depending on the department and type of opportunity.

5. Finish Onboarding Requirements

After approvals are completed, Human Resources will guide you through the onboarding process and provide instructions on any remaining steps before your internship or shadow experience begins.
