Brown University Health Community Health Institute (CHI) brings you “Brown University Health Community Connection,” a monthly video program featuring Brown University Health experts and providers involved in CHI initiatives to promote health equity and reduce health disparities in our surrounding communities.

Brown University Health Community Connection is hosted by Carrie Bridges, Brown University Health vice president of community health and equity. The series is conveniently accessible online 24/7 on Brown University Health’s YouTube channel.

Anti-racist Care for Sickle Cell Disease

Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease "“too often encounter racism that disrupts access to and delivery of high-quality healthcare,” says Carrie Bridges, MPH, Brown University Health vice president of community health and equity. The Brown University Health Community Health Institute and the Brown University Health Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center work to provide anti-racist care.

Mental Health in the Latine Community

Victoria Lugo, CHI community outreach specialist, discusses mental health and the Latine community with Yovanska Duarte-Velez, PhD, clinical director of Mi Gente Child and Family Outpatient Services. They explore ways young people and families can find help and lessen the stigma the community often associates with mental health.

Heart Health in Rhode Island

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Rhode Island. Carrie Bridges, MPH, Brown University Health vice president for community health and equity, and Southern New England American Heart Association (AHA) Executive Director Michelle Clark, get to the heart of Rhode Island’s heart health during a discussion about the two organizations’ years-long partnership.

Food and Nutrition Insecurity

The Brown University Health Community Health Institute and its partner, Southside Community Land Trust, are bridging the gap from farm-to-table by providing local families who are experiencing food insecurity with access to fresh, locally grown food that is reflective of many cultures.

Diabetes Prevention

One in three Rhode Islanders is pre-diabetic and they may not even know it. Sheryl Parente, a coach with our Diabetes Prevention Program, joins Carrie Bridges to share how she motivates her clients to achieve their health goals. Cancer Care for Women

Women in Rhode Island are provided with breast and cervical cancer screenings year-round, regardless of ability to pay or insurance coverage. Julie Abilheira, RN, vice president, Brown University Health Cancer Institute, and Tosin Ojugbele, MD, medical director, RI Department of Health, discuss this collaborative program.

Skin Cancer Prevention

Christopher DiMarco, MD, of Brown Dermatology and Ana Almeida DoRosario, CHI community outreach coordinator, discuss the importance of access to care to reduce skin cancer risks.  They review skin cancer signs and symptoms and how this most common form of cancer in the US is a year-round concern.
