Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is a cancerous tumor that starts in the bones. While bone cancer is rare, osteosarcoma is the most common type of cancer to develop in bone. Most osteosarcomas occur in children and young adults, but they can occur at any age. 

Ewing sarcoma

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare type of cancerous tumor that grows in bones or the soft tissue around bones. Ewing sarcoma is most common in children and young adults. It often starts in the legs, bones of the pelvis, and arms.

Bone sarcomas

Chondrosarcoma is the most common primary bone sarcoma occurring in adults, most commonly in the femur, pelvis, or humerus. Treatment of bone sarcomas usually requires limb salvage surgery which involves removal of the bone containing the tumor and reconstruction. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often required.

Soft tissue sarcoma

Soft tissue sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that develops in soft tissues like fat, muscle, nerves, tendons, or blood vessels. They most often occur in the arms or legs, but can develop in any part of the body. Treatment requires surgical removal and can include radiation therapy.

Metastatic bone disease

Metastatic bone disease is a cancer that begins in an organ, such as the lungs, kidney, breast, prostate, or thyroid, and spreads to bone. The spine, limbs and pelvis are some common locations of metastatic disease. Metastatic bone disease can damage and weaken bones, sometimes resulting in fractures.

Benign bone tumors

Giant cell tumor of the bone, simple bone cyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, enchondroma, osteochondroma, and fibrous dysplasia are some of the more common benign bone tumors. Some can destroy or distort bone and require treatment such as bone grafting. Some are inactive and do not require treatment.
