Gratitude Stories

Inspired by Personal Connections

Every philanthropic journey is unique. These stories highlight the many ways individuals and families choose to support Brown University Health.

Marc Barclay's Gratitude Story

Marc's Story

It was August of 2024, and Marylanders, Marc and Cathy Barclay, were enjoying a weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. Early on the Sunday morning of their stay, Marc made his way downstairs – then fell to the floor. “My right leg just went out from under me,” he remembers. “It was numb and, for the life of me, I just couldn’t get up.”

Gratitude Story - Alba

Alba's Story

“We trusted him completely, right from the beginning,” recalls Phoebe Livingston, remembering the moment her newborn daughter Alba was urgently referred to Albert Woo, MD—an internationally recognized leader in cleft and craniofacial surgery, chief of pediatric plastic surgery at Hasbro Children’s, and director of its Cleft and Craniofacial Center.

Patty's Gratitude Story

Patty's Story

It was a typical workday in mid-September for clinical nurse Patty McHugh when she received a “low heart rate” alert on her Fitbit. She was feeling normal, no dizziness or weakness, so Patty continued tending to her patients for a period before mentioning her device’s detection to a colleague. At the colleague’s urging, Patty took an EKG at the clinic, which confirmed her bradycardia.

Cristian's Story

For years, Cristian’s family knew something was not right. What began as moments of distress gradually grew more intense, affecting everyday life at home and leaving those who loved him searching for answers. Ordinary situations could quickly become overwhelming, and the family found themselves trying to manage a reality that felt increasingly fragile.

Grateful patient Diane
