Audiology Services

Compassionate, evidence-based hearing care for patients of all ages

At Brown University Health, we provide expert audiology services for patients throughout their lives, from infancy through adulthood. Our audiologists identify, diagnose, and treat hearing and balance disorders using advanced diagnostic tools and the latest technology (Audiologists do not perform therapy) in a welcoming, multidisciplinary environment.

As the only medical team in Rhode Island who performs sedated auditory evaluations and pediatric cochlear implant services, Brown Health ensures that patients with complex needs receive care unavailable elsewhere in the state.

Whether you need a hearing evaluation, a cochlear implant consultation, or care for a balance or ototoxicity-related condition, our audiology services in Rhode Island are grounded in the latest clinical research and technologies.

Services We Offer

Our patients benefit from an unmatched level of care and expertise, including:

Sedated Audiology Evaluations

These specialized evaluations are ideal for children who cannot tolerate contact with their ears. We are the only center in the state to offer this service.

Sedated ABR testing is performed in our Center for Pediatric Imaging, either on its own or in combination with other procedures requiring sedation. This test provides an objective evaluation of a child’s hearing and is especially helpful for children who are too young to complete traditional hearing tests or who are unable to participate in behavioral hearing evaluations due to medical or developmental needs.

Pediatric Amplification Program

Our experts fit and manage hearing instruments for children, including traditional and bone-anchored hearing aids.

Diagnostic Testing for Infants

We offer early diagnostic testing for babies who fail newborn hearing screenings—crucial for early language development

Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA)

We are one of the few centers in the region fitting these prosthetic devices in children and adults.

Auditory Processing Evaluations

These advanced tests help evaluate how the brain interprets sound—particularly useful for children with developmental concerns or adults with traumatic brain injury. We accept insurance for these services, unlike many other providers.

Pediatric Cochlear Implants

We are the only center in the state offering cochlear implants specifically for pediatric patients.

Ototoxicity Monitoring

We support children and adults undergoing treatment with medications—such as cisplatin or certain antibiotics—that may damage hearing. This is common in cancer treatment and clinical trials. Monitoring includes extended frequency examinations, which allows us to detect early changes in hearing before speech perception is affected. This is particularly valuable for patients at risk of progressive hearing loss.

We provide hearing monitoring for children and adults receiving medical treatments that may affect hearing. This includes patients undergoing certain therapies—such as those used in cancer care, clinical trials, or intravenous (IV) antibiotic treatments.

Balance Testing

We provide advanced vestibular testing that requires specialized equipment and clinical expertise, available at only a few centers in the region.

Our team has experience and specialized training in evaluating children with developmental differences, including those on the autism spectrum. We tailor our approach to each child’s unique needs to ensure a supportive and effective assessment experience. Many of our referrals come from the Child Neurodevelopment Center. We work closely with the speech-language pathology team to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to care.
