MyChart for Children and Teens

A MyChart portal for children and teens allows them to be more active in their care, while still protecting their privacy.

MyChart for Younger Children (under 13 years old)

For children under 13 years old, parents/guardians  have full access. They will be able to view and make appointments, review laboratory and imaging results, communicate securely with their providers and care teams, manage their health information, and much more.

MyChart for Teens (13 and older)

A teen can have their own MyChart portal without parental/guardian consent.  A MyChart portal for teens keeps parents/guardians involved and also allows teens to be more active in their care .  For teens aged 13 to 17, a parent’s/guardian’s view of their teenager’s MyChart is initially limited . If the parent/guardian, the child, and the provider all agree, the provider can change the parents/guardians view to full access during a patient visit  .

At age 16, this access will automatically change back to limited .  However, there are two ways that the parents/guardians can receive full access again:

  • Once they are 16, the child can go into their MyChart account  and give full access to the parent/guardian
  • The provider can restore full access to the parent if the child, the parents/guardians, and the provider agree

How to Enroll Your Child or Teen in MyChart and Proxy Access Details

If the child is 12 years old or younger

Parents need to have their own MyChart account first. If you have an account, you can ask your child’s pediatrician’s/provider’s office to add you as a proxy to your child’s chart. If you do not have a MyChart account, you can request one from your primary care physician’s office if you have a Brown Health Medical Group provider. They can sign you up directly or issue you an access code, then go to MyChart signup page and enter your access code along with your date of birth to get a MyChart account.

If you are unable to get an activation code because you are not a Brown University Health patient, you can select the “Sign up online” button after clicking MyChart signup page; this will allow you to enter additional information and get signed up.

If the teen is 13 years or older

The teen can request a MyChart portal themselves at any office visit and can be signed up/given access without parental consent. Parent proxies will start with “limited access” but can be granted “full access” by the provider after discussion and agreement between patient, provider, and guardian.

If the teen is 16 or 17 years old

Rhode Island Law recognizes that patients 16 and above can access their health care information and have the right to make their own health care decisions. If proxies were updated to “full access” between 13-15, they will be reverted back to “limited access” at 16, but can be granted “full access" by the provider after another discussion and agreement between patient, provider, and guardian.

It is important for teens in this age group to recognize that by granting their parent/guardian full access to their MyChart portal, they are allowing their parent/guardian to see their appointments and also note content, specifically what was discussed during the appointments including behavioral health sessions, reproductive health, and information from all other appointments (and hospital admissions).
