Brown University Health proudly announces the opening of the Center for Advanced Lung Care (CALC), a pioneering program dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with advanced lung and heart-lung diseases, as well as those experiencing unexplained difficulty breathing. Under the leadership of Corey E. Ventetuolo, MD, MS, FAHA, CALC is set to become a critical resource for the community.

CALC treats all forms of pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs), including chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), acute and chronic pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs), interstitial lung diseases including pulmonary fibrosis (scarring disorders of the lungs), advanced airways disorders like severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and provides care for pregnant women with lung disease, sleep disorders or respiratory symptoms.

As one of only a few centers of its kind in the United States—and the sole facility in Rhode Island and southeastern New England—CALC is equipped to provide the most advanced specialized treatments available.

“Our goal at the CALC is to return patients to the highest quality of life possible,” said Corey Ventetuolo, MD, MS, director of CALC. “For individuals who are homebound due to severe shortness of breath, our treatments can be transformative, allowing them the opportunity to return to work, travel, and engage fully in daily life.”

CALC employs a multidisciplinary approach to patient-centered care, collaborating with a diverse team of specialists, including pulmonologists, intensivists, cardiologists, interventional radiologists, anesthesiologists, cardiac and thoracic surgeons, nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, patient navigators, behavioral health specialists, nurse practitioners, and advanced practice providers.

CALC is also the only center in southern New England that offers advanced treatments for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Led by Dr. Christopher Mullin, MD, MHS, the doctors that now comprise CALC’s CTEPH team led the state’s first pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) and first balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA).

All CALC patients are assigned a patient navigator to help coordinate appointments, help patients understand referrals, assist with admissions and discharge paperwork and transitions of care, plan care goals for patients, and provide support and education about treatment options.
