New Grade for fall 2025 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety
Four hospitals within the Brown University Health system received an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The four hospitals gaining this distinction in patient safety are:
• Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI
• The Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI
• Newport Hospital in Newport, RI
• Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA
This national distinction recognizes hospitals for their commitment to patient safety and excellence in protecting patients from preventable harm and medical errors. Saint Anne’s Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, and Newport Hospital have each earned national straight ‘A’ status, demonstrated through high performance in safety, earning top marks in at least five or more grading cycles from the Leapfrog Group.
“The teams at Rhode Island, The Miriam, Newport, and Saint Anne’s hospitals, showcase Brown University Health’s commitment to delivering outstanding patient care across our facilities,” said Sarah Frost, chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “I couldn’t be more grateful to our amazing staff - their teamwork, skill, and unwavering focus on patient safety and outcomes are the driving force behind this national recognition.”
The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
“My sincere congratulations to Brown University Health for upholding patient safety standards through thick and thin, achieving ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grades for Rhode Island, The Miriam, Newport, and Saint Anne’s Hospitals, said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Consistently earning an ‘A’ demonstrates a long-term, organization-wide commitment to putting patient safety first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
