Saint Anne’s Hospital earns its 26th consecutive “A”
Four hospitals within the Brown University Health system received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The four hospitals gaining this distinction in patient safety are The Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI, Newport Hospital in Newport, RI, Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA and Morton Hospital in Taunton, MA, in addition Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI earned a “B” for Fall 2024.
This national distinction celebrates achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. Saint Anne’s Hospital has earned an “A” safety grade 26 consecutive times since the inception of the grading system in 2012. Making it one of only 12 hospitals in the country to hold this honor.
“This recognition highlights the dedication of our entire team at Brown University Health. We are steadfast in protecting those we serve, preventing harm, and reducing errors—ensuring that every patient receives the safest, most compassionate care possible,” said Sarah Frost, chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s.
“As a community hospital, Saint Anne’s Hospital has had a longstanding commitment to providing safe, high-quality care to our community’s patients,” said Carole Billington, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, interim hospital president and chief nursing officer. “Even with new and unique challenges every year, our staff and providers are dedicated to upholding high standards of care that work to minimize harm to patients. We’re enormously proud of our entire team’s dedication to a culture of safety that has resulted in Leapfrog’s Straight A grade for the past 12 years.”
The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Brown University Health,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to the Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, Saint Anne’s Hospital, Morton Hospital, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
