The Miriam Hospital has once again been named the top hospital in Rhode Island by U.S. News & World Report and for the second year in a row its adult urology program has been ranked among the top 50 in the nation.

The Miriam Hospital, an affiliate of the Lifespan health system and a teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, shone brightly in the U.S. News Best Hospitals report, whose 2020-21 edition came out today.

“The Miriam Hospital’s superb standing in the latest Best Hospitals rankings is a wonderful affirmation of the outstanding care our patients and their families receive when they visit us. It’s also a testament to the dedication and tireless efforts of our talented and skilled caregivers and support staff, who work together as a team to put patients first,” said Arthur J. Sampson, president of The Miriam Hospital.  “The Miriam has received numerous accolades in recent years and while we are always honored, our focus never wavers from our patients and delivering the best care possible.”

U.S. News ranked The Miriam Hospital a Best Regional hospital -- No. 1 among all Rhode Island hospitals as well as the top hospital in the Providence metro area. To be counted among this year's 563 Best Regional Hospitals, a hospital had to outperform in at least three of the procedures, conditions and specialties U.S. News evaluates. The Miriam Hospital wound up receiving a national “high performing” designation for eight programs and specialties:

  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Geriatrics
  • Nephrology
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Neurology and neurosurgery

The Miriam Hospital’s Urology program was not among these because it actually ranked among the 50 best in the country – placing it among the top 3 percent in the nation.  It is one of only three urology programs in New England to be ranked nationally and the only hospital specialty in Southern New England to achieve national ranking. It was the second consecutive year that The Miriam Hospital – home to the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute (MIUI) – was nationally ranked for urologic services for men and women, including kidney, prostate and bladder care.

The MIUI’s team of physicians have access to The Miriam’s two surgical robots, including the latest generation da Vinci Xi. The hospital substantially expanded its capacity to perform robot-assisted procedures when it acquired its second da Vinci early this year. These robotic systems enable skilled surgeons to perform procedures through tiny incisions, resulting in reduced pain and blood loss, quicker recovery, minimal scarring and fewer complications.

“The Miriam was the first hospital in Rhode Island to acquire a surgical robot in 2006 and this year we reached a remarkable milestone of having completed our 3,000th robot-assisted urologic surgery,” said urologic surgeon Dragan Golijanin, MD, co-director of the MIUI and director of genitourinary oncology at The Miriam. “That extensive institutional experience – gained both by our surgeons and surgical teams – translates into outcomes for our patients that are among the best in the nation.”

Urologic surgeon Gyan Pareek, MD, co-director of The Miriam’s Minimally Invasive Urology Institute (MIUI) and director of The Miriam’s Kidney Stone Center, said, “We perform many cutting-edge procedures for complex conditions and, as evident from the new rankings, we continue to deliver superior care and outcomes when compared to some of the largest, well-known medical centers in the country.”

Conditions treated at the MIUI include prostate cancer, bladder and ureter cancer, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, kidney stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), adrenal mass, ureteral stricture, and ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction.

The Miriam Hospital has maintained designation as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence since 1998 and in 2020 became one of the few hospitals nationwide to achieve the four-year designation for a sixth consecutive time. In 2019, The Miriam was included on the IBM Watson Health Top 100 Hospitals in the nation and was grouped among the top 15 teaching hospitals in the United States.
