Four hospitals within the Brown University Health system received an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The four hospitals gaining this distinction in patient safety are Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI, The Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI, Newport Hospital in Newport, RI, and Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA

This national distinction celebrates achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. Saint Anne’s Hospital has earned this highly elite ‘A’ safety grade 27 consecutive times since the inception of the grading system in 2012. In addition, The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital have earned straight ‘A’s’ in five consecutive grading cycles.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team at Rhode Island Hospital for their steadfast commitment to high-quality care and patient safety, as reflected in our Leapfrog ‘A’ safety grade for Spring 2025,” said Sarah Frost, chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “This recognition, along with ‘A’ safety grades earned by The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, and Saint Anne’s Hospital, highlights Brown University Health’s unwavering dedication to excellence across the system. I’m truly grateful to our care teams for the exceptional work they do every single day for our patients.”

"This recognition from the Leapfrog group is a direct reflection of the skills, dedication, and compassion of the team here at Newport Hospital," said Nicholas Dominick, interim president, Newport Hospital and SVP of Clinical Services, Brown University Health. "To have achieved this "A" safety grade for five consecutive years is a testament to the "wow" care this team delivers to our patients and community regularly."

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Saint Anne’s Hospital, and Newport Hospital its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
