Alexios G. Carayannopoulos, DO, MPH, DABPMR, FASOMR, FFSMB is chief of the physical medicine and rehabilitation departments at Rhode Island Hospital and Newport Hospital, and the Brown Health Medical Group. In addition, he is the medical director of outpatient rehabilitation at Brown University Health. Dr. Carayannopoulos is a full professor of neurosurgery and neurology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is a trustee of Brown Health Medical Group.

Dr. Carayannopoulos is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as in pain medicine. He completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Harvard Medical School and a pain medicine fellowship at Dartmouth Medical School. He earned a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and certification in medical acupuncture from Harvard University. He spent 13 years as a US Navy diver and submarine officer and is a specialist in undersea medicine and radiation health.

Dr. Carayannopoulos is internationally known as a leader in rehabilitation, pain medicine, and medical regulation. He is the president of the Rhode Island Society of Pain Physicians and the immediate past president of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners. He is chair of multiple committees within the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, North American Neuromodulation Society, and the International Neuromodulation Society. 

He was appointed to the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline, as well as the Board of Occupational Therapy. Dr. Carayannopoulos was elected to the board of directors of the Federation of State Medical Boards. He is a consultant in medical regulation to the American Osteopathic Association and the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.
