Edward Hulten, MD, MPH

Edward Hulten, MD, MPH is a cardiologist with Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute. He specializes in multimodality imaging and sees patients at the East Providence location.

Dr. Hulten has an extensive background in military medicine. Prior to joining Brown University Health, he was the director for noninvasive cardiovascular imaging at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, where he also was director of echocardiography and a research collaborator with the National Insititutes of Health. He has held positions as cardiology product line chair for the National Capital region, chief of cardiopulmonary clinic at Evans Army Community Hospital in Colorado, and was a staff cardiologist at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Virginia. He served tours as a field surgeon in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he was the officer in charge of a NATO troop medical clinic, and at Camp Red Cloud in South Korea, where he was in charge of a joint US and South Korean military medical clinic.

He earned the US Army Surgeon General “A” proficiency designator, the highest recognition for professional excellence in the US Army Medical Corps. Since his enlistment as an Army private and training as a Spanish linguist/signals intelligence analyst following high school, he remained in continuous military service and was promoted to colonel before retiring.

Dr. Hulten obtained a medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans. He also earned a master’s degree in public health in epidemiology from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Hulten completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases, both at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He also completed a clinical and research fellowship in advanced noninvasive cardiovascular imaging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Hulten graduated with honors with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and life sciences from the US Military Academy at West Point.

Dr. Hulten held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and the Uniformed Services University, where he became a professor of medicine. His research interests are in cardiovascular imaging, meta-analysis and statistical methods, cardiovascular epidemiology, cardiac perfusion, cardiomyopathy, and cardiac MRI sequence development.

He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, Society of Cardiovascular MRI, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Hulten is a frequent presenter at cardiovascular scientific meetings and contributor and voluntary peer reviewer to many scientific publications. Among them are JAMA, JAMA Cardiology, JACC, Circulation, and The Lancet. He serves as an associate editor of Atherosclerosis and Atherosclerosis:X, American College of Cardiology Cardiosmart, and Cases of the Society of Cardiac MRI.
