Find a Doctor Disclaimer
“Find a Doctor” is operated by Brown University Health and includes all physicians who are on the medical staffs of Brown University Health-affiliated hospitals, without any charge to them. Selection is based upon your needs and preferences. Search results will first present, in alphabetical order, physicians employed or contracted with Brown University Health or its affiliates, followed by an alphabetical listing of physicians who are in Brown University Health’s network of affiliated providers. At the end of that initial list, you can access an alphabetical listing of community physicians with privileges at Brown University Health hospitals. All physicians in Find a Doctor have the opportunity to have a picture or video posted on the site. Neither the order of physicians, nor the presence or absence of a photo or video, in Find a Doctor is intended to reflect any preference, priority, or recommendation by Brown University Health. Find a Doctor search results are also not based on the volume or value of referrals to Brown University Health or its affiliates from any listed physician. Users are free to select their physician of choice from among all Brown University Health-affiliated medical staff physicians.

Kate M. Guthrie, PhD
Senior Research Scientist
Kate M. Guthrie, PhD, is a senior research scientist at the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital and a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She holds a secondary appointment as professor of behavioral and social sciences in the Brown University School of Public Health.
Dr. Guthrie’s research interests focus on understanding the experience of those who use biomedical products, treatments and technologies, and how those experiences impact adherence and acceptability. Her primary focus has been on HIV and STI prevention, with an emphasis on adherence to, and acceptability of, experimental vaginal microbicides designed to provide woman-controlled HIV/STI prevention options. She has been principal investigator on several US National Institute of Health (NIH) research studies, including an R01 designed to develop and evaluate instruments to measure factors related to microbicide use, a Microbicide Innovation Program (MIP), and most prominently, project lead for adherence and acceptability studies within multiple-project U19s (Integrated Preclinical/Clinical Program for HIV (Topical) Microbicides and Biomedical Prevention).
In addition, Dr. Guthrie was one of the principal investigators on a US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) funded cooperative agreement which designed and evaluated an HIV/STD/hepatitis intervention for young men leaving an incarcerated setting, a program which later became a CDC Diffusing Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) program. Most recently, Dr. Guthrie’s research encompasses a range of diseases and conditions, with the common goal of understanding how patients understand, experience, and use biomedical technologies and services, and how providers and health systems can optimize those experiences toward better health outcomes.
Dr. Guthrie's research, conducted both domestically and internationally, incorporates traditional quantitative evaluation, qualitative methods, and mixed methodologies. She is director of the Qualitative Science and Methods Training Program (QSMTP), which serves as a Methods Core within the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University, and interfaces with Brown University Health’s BERDI and Brown’s Advance-CTR. QSMTP mentors postdoctoral trainees and faculty in qualitative and mixed research methods, facilitating their ability to develop and evaluate interventions and measurement systems within their own research areas.
