Laura A. Scrimgeour, MD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon with the Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute.

Dr. Scrimgeour earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She completed her general surgery internship, residency, and chief residency at Rhode Island Hospital/The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where she also completed a NIH-funded T32 research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. Following her time at Brown University, Dr. Scrimgeour pursued advanced training in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, one of the nation’s leading cardiothoracic programs, before being selected for a highly competitive structural heart fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Her achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Michael J. Davidson Structural Heart Fellowship Award, the AATS Leadership Award, the YWCA Tribute to Women Leadership Award, and the Vivien Thomas Young Investigator Award, American Heart Association.

In addition, Dr. Scrimgeour has received multiple research, leadership, and travel fellowships, including the Brian A. Dorman International Rotation Scholarship, supporting her work at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya on global cardiac surgery initiatives. She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Scrimgeour is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, the American Heart Association, and Women in Thoracic Surgery. She was part of the first all-female heart transplant team in 2023. 

Dr. Scrimgeour's clinical and academic interests focus on coronary artery disease including hybrid approaches, minimally invasive and innovative surgical techniques, structural heart disease, basic and translational research on myocardial ischemia, and advancing pathways for women and underrepresented groups in cardiothoracic surgery.
