Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeon

Matthew Akelman, MD, is a fellowship-trained hand-to-shoulder surgeon with advanced expertise in minimally invasive arthroscopy, joint replacement, carpal tunnel release, and fracture fixation.

Dr. Akelman works with patients experiencing challenges to their entire upper extremity, from fingertip to shoulder. His approach to care integrates evidence-based management and shared decision-making, ensuring that each treatment is grounded in research and tailored to fit his patients’ health needs and lifestyle.

Dr. Akelman earned a medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He completed fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at Duke University, focusing on complex reconstruction, arthroscopy, and arthroplasty.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Akelman is an active clinician-scientist whose peer-reviewed research on upper extremity disorders has been published and presented at national meetings. He serves as a clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
