Radiation Oncologist

Sana Raoof, MD, PhD, a thoracic radiation oncologist and physician scientist specializing in early cancer detection, treats patients at the Brown University Health Cancer Institute.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Raoof is an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and co-director of the Legoretta Cancer Center’s screening initiative.

She completed a combined medical and doctoral degree with the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology. She then completed her internal medicine internship at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by residency training in radiation oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she received the Holman Fellowship for post-doctoral research in molecular cancer screening.

Dr. Raoof’s research focuses on improving blood-based methods for detecting cancer earlier. She is part of a team designing a future clinical study of a multi-cancer blood test. As part of the team, she is helping to determine the accuracy needed and which patients may benefit most.

She also leads a Brown University project to expand lung cancer screening for people who are not currently eligible, and evaluate whether newer blood based tools can detect cancer earlier in this group.

Her work has been recognized with several national honors, including the NIH F30 Award; the George and Daisy Soros Fellowship; the US Surgeon General’s National Excellence in Public Health Award; and Forbes 30 Under 30 in Healthcare.

Dr. Raoof serves on the American Cancer Society Guideline Development Group, where she contributes to national cancer screening recommendations, and on the Panel of Health Advisors to the Congressional Budget Office, providing expertise on clinical utility and regulatory considerations for emerging screening technologies. She also participates in the National Multi Cancer Early Detection Consortium.
