Treatment Options
Possible treatments for osteoporosis include the following:
- A diet with sufficient calcium and vitamin D. Your physician may suggest calcium and vitamin D supplements.
- Exercise, such as walking, lifting weights or using weight machines, may also help to increase your bone density and your strength.
- Medications are available to reduce bone loss and increase bone thickness, including:
- Alendronate (Fosamax)
- Raloxifene (Evista)
- Calcitonin (Miacalcin) nasal spray
- Risedronate (Actonel)
- Teriparatide (Forteo)
