Osteoporosis is characterized by bone loss that can result in fractures. Nearly 50 percent of women and 25 percent of men older than 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
There are no early warning signs. Many people are unaware that they have osteoporosis until a fracture has occurred, typically involving the spine, hip or forearm.

An evaluation of your bone density, called a DXA measurement, can determine if you are at risk for osteoporotic fractures. The test uses a low-dose X-ray to measure the mineral content of the bones of your lower back, hip or sometimes the forearm.
The bone densitometry unit is located on West River Street in Providence. We provide testing services for men and women, age 18 years and older, on our Hologic densitometer. We can accommodate patients who weigh up to 450 pounds and those who arrive by wheelchair or stretcher.
