Emergency Services at Hasbro Children's

The Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) at Hasbro Children’s is the only emergency department in the region dedicated to the emergent and urgent medical needs of children and adolescents, caring for children and adolescents from birth to age 18 and beyond. With almost 60,000 visits per year, the Hasbro emergency department provides a significant proportion of the emergency and pediatric referral care to families in Rhode Island and surrounding regions.

As the regional tertiary care children’s hospital and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, the Hasbro Children's ED is staffed 24 hours a day by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians and pediatric emergency nurses with access to pediatric surgeons and other pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists.

The Hasbro Children’s Emergency Department provides pediatric emergency care, acute critical care, and stabilization, as well as:

  • Pediatric subspecialty medical and surgical care
  • Level 1 pediatric trauma and burn care
  • Pediatric emergency psychiatric and behavioral services
  • Pediatric acute sedation services
  • Pediatric observation care in a dedicated Clinical Decision Unit
  • Pediatric support services
  • Interpreter and social work services
  • Child Life Services and an emergency department art program

For many families in the region, the pediatric emergency department is the gateway to Hasbro Children’s, Bradley Hospital, and other services in the region. More than 75 percent of the patients who are admitted to Hasbro Children’s arrive through its emergency department.

Children or teens whom providers decide need urgent, but not emergency, psychiatric care are referred to the PACE (Psychiatry Access, Continuity, and Evaluation) Clinic. The clinic provides short-term, outpatient psychiatric care until a child or teen can begin an ongoing treatment program. Appointments are arranged through referrals from the pediatric emergency department or other channels.

The Hasbro Children's emergency department is the academic teaching site for pediatric emergency medicine for the Lifespan/Brown-Affiliated ACGME residencies in pediatrics and emergency medicine and for the Alpert medical school and family practice residency of Brown University. The department also supports a longstanding ACGME fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine. Pediatric emergency medicine faculty serve to provide leadership for the Brown University Health Medical Simulation Center and play a significant role in the education of community medical and EMS providers in preparing for and providing emergency care to children.
