Vascular and Interventional Radiology Suite at The Miriam Hospital

Brown University Health Medical Imaging has enhanced its interventional radiology practices with a state-of-the-art Vascular and Interventional Radiology Suite at The Miriam Hospital.

The suite is equipped with the new GE Healthcare Allia IGS 7, making us the first in Southeastern New England to offer this cutting-edge technology. This new, highly advanced robotic equipment offers customizable imaging protocols and intervention-specific tools allowing clinicians to tailor procedures individually for each patient.

Improved Technique

"With this improved technology, our patients experience a smooth and comfortable procedure with reliable results,” says Michael Aldridge, director of clinical operations for interventional diagnostic imaging at Brown University Health Medical Imaging.

Expanding Clinical Capabilities

Our team of trained clinicians and imaging technologists can incorporate the new equipment with emerging technologies such as augmented reality and artificial intelligence, leading to new avenues for research, innovation, and advanced treatment methodologies. It enhances precision, efficiency, and patient care for minimally invasive catheter-based procedures that include:

  • Biopsies
  • Drainage
  • Interventional oncology
  • Ablation procedures
  • Venuous procedures
  • Deep vein thrombosis treatments

Designed by Physicians

The Allia IGS system was created with help from physicians. Nearly half of all procedures are performed in positions where doctors struggle to reach important controls or see displays clearly. The new system solves this by giving users a personalized, easy-to-use workspace as soon as they enter the room. As a robot, it adds more flexibility — it’s not attached to the floor or ceiling, so it can move freely and avoid collisions, even in tight spaces.

High Quality Images, Low Radiation

This outstanding imaging technology uses the lowest radiation dose possible, while producing reliable, real-time, three-dimensional images that help physicians better diagnose and treat patients.

Enhanced Patient and Doctor Experience

Most essentially, we provide patients with enhanced access to leading-edge treatments and procedures. They experience:

  • Faster scan times for high-quality images
  • More mobility that is comfortable and eases anxiety
  • Ample time with physician, less adjustments with equipment
