Low Sexual Desire
What is it?
This is a lack, or absence, of sexual thoughts and fantasies that can lead to the failure to initiate sexual activity or the failure to respond to a partner who is initiating sexual activity. When this leads to emotional distress and interpersonal problems, it is known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder.

Am I at risk?
Stress, relationship difficulties, psychiatric problems, chronic medical problems, and conditions affecting hormone levels (testosterone and prolactin) are associated with low sexual desire.
How is it evaluated?
Evaluation involves a thorough medical history and exam, psychiatric history and review of medications. Lab testing may also be helpful.
How is low sexual desire treated?
Treatment includes individual and couples psychotherapy and oral medications.
