Neurocritical Care

Approximately 50 million Americans are affected by neurological disorders each year. The range of treatments and care required is largely dependent on the specific type of disorder, and the timing of a patient’s diagnosis.

The Neurocritical Care (NCC) team at Rhode Island Hospital, part of the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute, treats patients with some of the most complex neurological conditions, including stroke, epilepsy, spinal cord trauma, hemorrhages, and more.

The entire team specializes in treating brain injuries and preventing further damage to the brain by preventing secondary brain injuries in critically ill neurological patients.

Neurocritical Conditions We Treat

Among the neurocritical conditions we treat:

  • Brain hemorrhage
  • Brain trauma
  • Encephalitis
  • Epilepsy
  • Hemorrhagic stroke
  • Ischemic stroke
  • Meningitis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Neurocritical Care Monitoring We Provide

Neurocritical care monitoring treatments we provide:

  • Brain tissue oxygenation monitoring
  • Clinical neurological assessments
  • Continuous EEG monitoring
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring

The Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU) has 18 beds dedicated to critically ill neurological patients. The team is specialized in the most complex neurological disorders and strives to preserve each patient’s quality of life.

The NCC team collaborates closely with neuroscientists across the system, including:
