The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA), a nonprofit and educational membership organization committed to providing education, certification, and networking opportunities to all persons involved in clinical research activities will hold its Rhode Island Chapter meeting on Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 1 to 2 p.m. via a virtual presentation.
Topic
The title of this presentation will be "Single IRB: When Less is More."
Overview
The single IRB process is comprised of federal guidance and institution-specific procedures. Whether the local study team is identified as the lead site or a relying site, understanding the roles and responsibilities of the collaborating researchers is an essential component to ensure the protection of the rights, safety, and welfare of the study participants. Understanding the differences between standard review and single IRB review will allow the local study team to prepare for an efficient review process, incorporating a clear communication plan designed to sustain the project through completion.
Objectives
This presentation will focus on providing:
- An overview of the purpose of single IRB review process
- Understanding of the responsibilities of the principal investigator/coordinator when relying on the review of an external IRB
- Understanding of benefits of a communication plan
Speaker
This presentation will be led by Claire Walker, senior HRPP reliance administrator at Brown University Health.

Join us for this in-person, eight-hour course on providing mental health first aid for adults.
Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour course that gives non-behavioral health specialists the skills to help someone who is in emotional crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy, helping the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and emotional stress.
Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, mental health first aid training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis, such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives. Mental health first aiders learn a single five-step strategy that includes assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other supports. Participants are also introduced to risk factors and warning signs for mental health or substance use problems, and they engage in experiential activities that build understanding of the impact of illness on individuals and families and learn about evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of these two sessions, participants should be able to:
- Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
- Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- Interact effectively with a person in crisis.
- Connect a person with help.

The first step in effective suicide prevention is to identify someone in need of help. Asking three to six simple questions can help determine whether someone needs help and if immediate action is needed.
In this training, participants learn to administer the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale-Screen Version (C-SSRS Screener), an evidence-based tool used by those without specialized training in suicide assessment. Participants also review current national and Rhode Island statistics on suicide; learn risk factors, warning signs, myths and facts and local Rhode Island resources.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice using the C-SSRS Screener in a safe supportive environment through the use of video demonstrations, case studies and role plays.
