The Anne C. Pappas Center for Breast Imaging is proud to announce it is the first facility in Rhode Island to offer contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), a groundbreaking digital mammography technique designed to improve diagnostic capabilities for breast cancer detection.

Contrast-enhanced mammography combines the convenience of traditional mammography with advanced cancer detection features, providing significant advantages for patients. This innovative approach enhances visualization of tumors, particularly for those with a recent cancer diagnosis, a history of breast cancer, or abnormal mammogram results.

“CEM allows us to see cancers more clearly, especially in women with dense breast tissue,” stated Martha Mainiero, MD, radiologist and director of the Pappas Center. “By using an iodine-based intravenous contrast agent in conjunction with a digital mammogram, we can achieve a clearer distinction between normal tissue and potential lesions.”

The CEM process involves a simple IV placement and the injection of iodinated contrast, like that used in CT scans, immediately before the mammogram. This technique can be performed after a traditional mammogram or ultrasound to gather additional information about areas that appear abnormal.

CEM offers a comparable level of detail to breast MRI, making it a valuable alternative for patients who cannot undergo MRI or prefer not to. The enhanced imaging capabilities provided by CEM allow radiologists to analyze mammographic images taken before and after the contrast injection, facilitating easier detection of changes.

While CEM presents numerous benefits in identifying and diagnosing breast cancer, it is important to note that, like all medical procedures, it carries certain risks, including potential allergic reactions to the contrast agent. Each case is evaluated to ensure the benefits outweigh any risks.

“CEM is already making a significant impact on our patients’ lives, enhancing our ability to identify, diagnose, and treat breast cancer effectively,” Dr. Mainiero added.
