Inpatient Care

Saint Anne’s provides specialized care for cancer patients who require hospitalization, delivering holistic care that addresses a patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Our nursing model fosters the valuable relationship between nurse, patient, and patient’s family, creating a comfortable and familiar atmosphere.

Both the Fall River and the Darmouth centers provide comprehensive medical oncology and hematology, radiation oncology, and related professional and support services.

Radiation Oncology

The goal of radiation therapy is to deliver radiation that targets cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue from damage. Several different radiation therapy techniques have been developed to accomplish this. Depending on the type of cancer to be treated, radiation therapy may be administered externally, or internally using special radioactive techniques.

Our advanced radiation therapy technologies include:

  • 4-D CT simulation technology for advanced radiation therapy planning
  • Four linear accelerators in two locations that provide state-of-the-art external beam radiation therapy
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) that adjusts for movement, such as with normal breathing
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy for gynecologic, skin, and other cancers
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery for brain and neurological cancers
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (also known as Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiation Therapy) for the treatment of lung and other cancers

Access to national clinical trials is available through through the National Cancer Institute.

Our Radiation Oncology Team

Our board-certified and fellowship-trained radiation oncologists, who are affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, offer the region’s most extensive array of radiation therapies at our locations in Dartmouth and Fall River. As a multidisciplinary team, oncology specialists work together to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient. We ensure that referring physicians and other cancer care specialists involved in the patient’s care are kept informed of those plans and the patient’s progress during and after radiation therapy.

Other members of the team include medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists, specially trained nurses, support staff (including social workers, physical therapists, and registered dietitians focused on caring for patients with a cancer diagnosis).

Medical Oncology and Hematology

Saint Anne's Hospital Regional Cancer Center delivers the latest medical oncology and hematology care, including chemotherapy, biological and other targeted therapies, hematology services, access to national clinical trials, and support services. We offer these therapies and services to patients and families in the Greater Fall River and Greater New Bedford areas.

Our Medical Oncology and Hematology Team

The center's medical oncology and hematology medical staff consists of a team of highly trained physicians. In addition, our registered nurses trained in medical oncology are among the region’s most accomplished nurses in the field of cancer care. They maintain extensive training in the administration of chemotherapy, and many have earned prestigious oncology-certified nursing (OCN) certification. The national OCN designation, awarded to registered nurses by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, signifies advanced cancer care knowledge and practice.
