Dermatology Specialty Clinics

Brown Health Medical Group Dermatology specialty clinics provide focused, expert care for patients with complex, chronic, and uncommon skin conditions. Building on a full range of general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services, our experienced providers work closely with patients and referring clinicians across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut to diagnose and manage conditions that affect daily life—from psoriasis and hair disorders to skin cancer and transplant‑related skin disease.

Through coordinated, patient‑centered care and access to advanced diagnostic and treatment options, our specialty clinics are designed to help individuals understand their condition, navigate their care, and achieve the best possible outcomes. Learn more about our service below.

Contact Dermatitis Center

Location: Rhode Island Hospital
Hours: Tuesday mornings
Phone: 401-606-8443
Fax: 401-444-7142

The Contact Dermatitis Center is a regional referral service specializing in the evaluation of rashes that may be caused by contact allergies or occupational exposures. Patients are seen by referral only from dermatologists, allergists, or occupational medicine physicians.

Typically, patients receive a detailed evaluation and undergo patch testing on the same day. The patches remain in place for 48 hours and are removed at home. Patients then return the following day for an initial reading and again two days later for a second reading to check for delayed reactions.

Patch testing is painless and involves placing small amounts of each allergen under an adhesive “patch.” No needles or skin pricking are used, making this test comfortable even for children.

A detailed report is sent to the referring physician, and all patients receive printed educational materials and one‑on‑one counseling about any positive test results.

If you are interested in patch testing, please contact your dermatologist, allergist, or occupational medicine physician and ask them to fax the referral form to us.

Patients with advanced or complex skin cancers face an expanding and often overwhelming range of diagnostic and treatment options. To help streamline this process, the multidisciplinary cutaneous oncology program supports referring providers in caring for patients with complex skin cancers, including melanoma, keratinocyte cancers (basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas), and other non‑melanoma skin cancers.

Our program brings together specialists in surgical oncology, medical oncology, dermatology, radiation oncology, and dermatopathology—and includes additional experts as needed. These clinicians have extensive experience in managing advanced or complex skin cancers and work together to create individualized, comprehensive care plans for patients at any stage of disease.

If you would like to be seen by our team, please ask your provider to submit a referral. Once received, the referral is reviewed by our tumor board leadership, and you will be scheduled with the appropriate specialist or specialists based on national guidelines of care. When possible, we consolidate appointments to reduce the burden of multiple visits. Depending on your condition, your case may also be discussed at our weekly multidisciplinary tumor board to determine the best course of action.

Note: Patients with cutaneous lymphoma should be seen in the cutaneous lymphoma clinic.

PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT)

Phone: 401‑444‑7959
Fax: 401‑808‑6470

The Blu‑U blue light photodynamic therapy illuminator is used to treat minimally to moderately thick actinic keratoses (AKs). Actinic keratoses—often called “sun spots”—are common precancerous skin lesions that appear as rough, dry, or scaly patches caused by long‑term ultraviolet (UV) exposure. They commonly occur on sun‑exposed areas such as the face, scalp, and ears, and range in color from natural skin tones to reddish brown. These spots can be as small as a pinhead or larger than a quarter.

Frequent skin examinations are essential for early detection and prevention of AKs. Treatment may include Levulan PDT, a topical solution applied directly to the affected areas. The solution is absorbed by AK cells and converted into a photosensitizing substance that makes them highly sensitive to light. When these cells are then exposed to the Blu‑U blue light, a targeted reaction occurs that destroys the precancerous cells.

Phone: 401-444-7959
Fax: 401-738-3857

Using a carefully focused beam of laser light delivered through an advanced technology light guide device, the Xtrac excimer laser system can treat psoriasis lesions quickly and effectively.

The Xtrac laser concentrates the light only on the psoriasis lesion, allowing the physician to deliver high doses necessary for rapid clearing while minimizing exposure of healthy skin. Individual results will vary depending on the body surface affected. Most patients experience significant improvement in as few as six to 10 treatments and clearance in 10 to 20, depending on the severity.
