Geriatric Oncology Consultation Program

Brown University Health Cancer Institute

What is Geriatric Oncology?

Geriatric oncology addresses the unique circumstances involved in treating cancer at any stage in patients over age 70, especially vulnerable elders and those with acute or chronic diseases. The Geriatric Oncology Consultation Program at Rhode Island Hospital is a consultative clinic that assists older cancer patients and their care providers in managing both cancer care and other common problems.

Our services focus on individualized assessment of a patient’s risk profile, and help with decision-making. We share all our findings and recommendations with the referring physician and the patient and family, so they can decide how they wish to incorporate our recommendations into treatment plans.

Our Oncology Medical Home Philosophy

As a program of the Brown University Health Cancer Institute, the Geriatric Oncology Consultation Program is part of a comprehensive patient-centered model of care, called the “oncology medical home.”

The oncology medical home model represents our philosophy of complete cancer care, which includes treatment, multidisciplinary clinics, palliative care, nutrition counseling, social work, and clinical research, including opportunities to participate in clinical trials when appropriate.

Our goal is to provide patients the highest quality evidence-based treatment, ensuring the best possible outcomes and best quality of life. We also offer our patients multiple locations and convenient, extended hours.
