Medical Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program
Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute
Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Services
The Medical Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program at the Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute is the only one of its kind in the state. We provide an integrated approach to patient care that involves our physicians, nurses and specialists working alongside primary care physicians and family members.
Our program offers the full range of conventional procedures for heart failure from evaluation and diagnosis to treatment, surgery and follow-up care. We are able to recommend the most appropriate procedure for each patient based on complete and thorough testing of the functional impairment of the heart.
Hearts at Home Program
This program is designed to help heart failure patients stay home, stay healthy and stay out of the hospital. Hearts at Home provides a safe transition from hospital to home while providing personalized, hospital-level care at home to manage your heart failure.
Unique Collaboration with Tufts-New England Medical Center
Our physicians work with the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston to provide a comprehensive array of medical services. This unique collaboration gives patients access to world-class care close to home: our patients receive pre- and postoperative care at our hospital and transplant surgery at Tufts-New England Medical Center. Tufts-New England Medical Center has been at the forefront of heart failure management for more than 20 years, initiating its program in heart transplants in 1985. It also continues to be a leading center for the study of dysfunction of the left ventricle of the heart and has been instrumental in developing new treatments for heart failure.

Our Experts Pioneer New Treatments
Our staff has pioneered innovative therapies for individuals with a full range of cardiac problems and has played a key role in developing national guidelines for heart failure. Our physicians are renowned for development of new techniques to reestablish blood flow to arteries that had become blocked, including those for high-risk heart failure patients. Two of the program's physicians are the only cardiologists in Rhode Island to be board certified in advanced heart failure and transplant. They evaluate patients for advanced heart failure, transplant and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement.
Research and Clinical Trials
Our researchers have played an active role in numerous clinical trials to test new medicines and treatments for heart failure and transplants.
