It is important to understand, however, that your child may, or may not, be covered for services provided by the Neuropsychology Program at Rhode Island Hospital. There is increasing variability in the coverage for neuropsychological assessments by health insurance companies. In general, insurance companies may not approve neuropsychological assessments when:
The referral is focused primarily on educational issues, such as a specific learning disorder, without an underlying medical cause
The child has marked behavioral problems (e.g. Oppositional Defiant Disorder) that would interfere with his or her ability to perform during the assessment
There is not a specific medical or mental health provider requesting testing
Similar tests have been completed recently (e.g. less than 1 year)
Attempts to treat the problem have not yet been made, particularly for psychiatric conditions, such as ADHD, depression, or anxiety
