If you’re planning ahead, here are some resources available to you before your surgery:
Pre-operative Resources
Pre-operative Health Optimization
Better Health Equals Better Recovery After Joint Replacement Surgery
Your overall health is very important when considering a joint replacement surgery. Better health means better recovery. You will discuss your health with your surgeon prior to surgery to make sure you are safe for surgery and in optimal health, to have the best chance of a positive outcome. There are certain health issues that can increase your risk of complications during and after joint replacement surgery. Some of these health issues are things you can actively work on, and change. Your surgeon may ask you to address some of these health issues, prior to being considered a candidate for surgery. Many insurance companies also have strict guidelines as to who is, and who is not, a candidate for joint replacement surgery.
You may be asked to address:
- Uncontrolled blood sugars
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Active nicotine use
- Weight loss
Homecare Agencies
Most patients are discharged from the hospital after surgery within 1 day. The Miriam Hospital will coordinate setting up a homecare agency to come out to your house after surgery to evaluate you, and guide your progress with mobility.

Skilled Nursing Facilities
