Conditions We Treat

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection (STI) caused by chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, often with no symptoms.

Symptoms

For women, symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Burning with urination
  • Pelvic pain or bleeding after sex

For men, symptoms may include:

  • Penile discharge
  • Burning with urination
  • Testicular pain

Treatment

  • Antibiotics
  • Sexual partners need treatment as well
  • Avoid sex for seven days after treatment is completed

Prevention

  • Condoms and barrier protection
  • Regular STI screening
  • Limiting number of sexual partners
Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial STI caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can infect the genitals, throat, or rectum.

Symptoms

Gonorrhea can often be asymptomatic. When there are symptoms they may include:

  • Burning with urination
  • Yellow or white discharge
  • Pelvic or testicular pain

Treatment

  • Antibiotics
  • Sexual partners need treatment as well
  • Avoid sex for seven days after treatment is completed

Prevention

  • Condoms and barrier protection
  • Regular STI screening
  • Limiting number of sexual partners
Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum. Syphilis progresses in stages of primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary if untreated.

Symptoms

Primary

  • Painless sore (ulcer) on genitals, mouth, or rectum

Secondary

  • Rash
  • Fever, swollen lymph nodes
  • Fatigue

Latent

  • No symptoms

Tertiary (rare, late)

  • Heart, brain, or nerve complications

Treatment

  • Antibiotics

Prevention

  • Condom use
  • Regular testing
  • Limiting number of sexual partners
  • Doxycycline PEP for certain high-risk individuals
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

HSV is a viral infection caused by HSV-1 or HSV-2. It causes genital or oral lesions.

Symptoms

  • Painful blisters or sores
  • Burning or tingling prior to outbreaks
  • Flu-like symptoms during the first outbreak
  • Some individuals have no symptoms

Treatment

  • No cure, but antiviral medication can reduce outbreaks and transmission

Prevention

  • Condoms can lower risk
  • Avoid sex during outbreaks
  • Daily antivirals to reduce transmission
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV is a very common viral infection. Certain strains cause genital warts; others cause cervical, anal, throat, or penile cancer.

Symptoms

  • Often asymptomatic
  • Genital warts that are small, skin-colored bumps.

Treatment

  • No cure for the virus itself
  • Treatments for warts include topical medications, freezing, or surgical removal
  • Frequent monitoring via cervical or anal screening.

Prevention

  • HPV vaccine for protection against cancer-causing strains
  • Condom use
  • Routine screening based on age and risk
Vaginitis

Vaginitis is vaginal irritation and discharge caused most frequently by yeast or bacterial overgrowth.

Symptoms

  • Abnormal discharge
  • Vaginal itching or irritation
  • Odor

Treatment

  • Antibiotics or antifungal, based on diagnosis

Prevention

  • Avoid douching
  • Wear breathable underwear
  • Practice safe sex
  • Maintain balanced vaginal flora
Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a parasitic STI caused by Trichomonas vaginalis.

Symptoms

  • Frothy, yellow-green vaginal discharge with strong odor
  • Vaginal irritation or itching
  • Burning with urination
  • Men often have no symptoms or mild irritation

Treatment

  • Oral antibiotics
  • Sexual partners need treatment as well
  • Prevention
  • Condom use
  • Routine STI testing
Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is spread through blood exposure and less commonly, through sexual contact.

Symptoms

  • Often asymptomatic
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)

Treatment

  • Oral antiviral medications
  • Regular liver monitoring
  • Avoid alcohol to protect liver health

Prevention

  • No vaccine currently
  • Avoid sharing needles, razors, or personal items
  • Practice safe sex
