Human Research Protection Program (HRPP)

We are pleased to announce the alignment of the human research protection and Institutional Review Board (IRB) operations of Brown University, Brown University Health and Care New England, as part of the BIRCH initiative, anticipated to launch in early 2026. 

This unification will create a single, centralized Human Research Protection Program at Brown University, featuring a centralized office, consistent policies and procedures, and a more efficient submission process.

About the Human Research Protection Program

The role of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is to protect the rights and welfare of research participants through regulatory compliance, education, monitoring and community engagement. Brown University Health’s HRPP works together with institutional stakeholders in achieving the common goal to protect research participants in the conduct of human research.

The mission of HRPP is to safeguard and promote the health and welfare of human research subjects by ensuring that their rights, safety, and well-being are protected; provide timely and high-quality education, review, and monitoring of human research projects; and facilitate excellence in human subjects’ research.
