About Gateway Healthcare

Every year, millions of people experience behavioral health issues such as anxiety, depression, and substance use challenges. And every year, many do not seek the help they need.

Gateway believes that behavioral healthcare services help individuals and families build resilience, enhance coping skills, and strengthen their ability to manage both acute or long-term mental health and/or substance use challenges.

We offer outpatient, community-based, in-home and residential mental health and substance use treatment. We strive to provide high quality, individual and family-centered care to our clients.

We support our clients’ independence by helping them minimize their symptoms, increase their self-sufficiency, and improve their communication and relationship skills. Gateway works in partnership with families, providers, schools, and community organizations to ensure coordinated, consistent support.

A Promising Future Built on a Caring Past

Our mission, to promote resiliency and assist people in their recovery from mental health, substance use, and behavioral and emotional disorders, is reflected throughout the care and compassion we give our patients every day.

We are licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals as a Community Mental Health Center (CMHC). Gateway has been in operation since its incorporation in 1966 as the Community Counseling Center in Pawtucket. In 1994, it merged with Mental Health Services to form Gateway Healthcare, and then in 2009, merged with South Shore Mental Health Services. Our affiliation with Lifespan, now Brown University Health, in 2013 provided the opportunity to promote population health in the communities we serve.

Becoming a Certified Community Care Behavioral Health Clinic

Gateway Healthcare is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) with services throughout Rhode Island. A CCBHC is an outpatient model for providing a comprehensive range of mental health and substance use services. CCBHCs serve all individuals, regardless of their diagnosis, ability to pay, or residence, with the goals to:

  • Ensure access to integrated, evidence-based substance use disorder and mental health services, including 24/7 crisis response.
  • Meet stringent criteria regarding timeliness of access, quality reporting, staffing, and care coordination with healthcare, social services, criminal justice, and education systems.
  • Identify health disparities of underserved populations and increase resources to improve outcomes.
  • Deliver individual and family-centered care that is trauma informed, recovery oriented, culturally responsive, and integrated across systems of care

Through partnerships with respected organizations around the state, we ensure that clients’ overall mental, physical, and basic needs are met.

Partnering to Meet Our Community’s Needs

Over the years, Gateway has grown by partnering with other organizations that share its commitment to care. These partners help expand services and reach more people in different communities. Gateway’s affiliates include: FRIENDS WAY, The Autism Project, and Capital City Community Centers.
