Advanced Technology and Treatment Options

The orthopedics team uses advanced technology to diagnose and treat patients, including computed tomography (CT) scans, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound (sonography).

Minimally Invasive Orthopedic Procedures

Surgeons at Saint Anne’s Hospital use minimally invasive orthopedic procedures, arthroscopy, and microsurgery to reduce tissue disruption, shorten recovery times, and improve outcomes. The team also provides care for specialized needs, including orthopedic oncology and complex reconstructive procedures.

In 2011, Saint Anne's was the first hospital in Massachusetts to offer Mako, an innovative, robotic-arm assisted alternative to traditional knee and hip replacement surgeries. Our orthopedic surgeons have performed more than 2,000 Mako procedures, including total knee replacement, partial knee resurfacing, and total hip replacement. We are the first and most experienced provider in Southern Massachusetts to offer Mako for all three joint replacement procedures.

Mako Partial Knee Replacement and Total Knee Replacement

Mako partial knee replacement and total knee replacement are designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration and can offer:

  • Improved surgical outcomes resulting in a more natural feeling knee following surgery
  • Less implant wear and loosening
  • Joint resurfacing
  • Bone sparing
  • Smaller incision
  • Less scarring
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospitalization
  • Rapid recovery

Mako Total Hip Replacement

Mako total hip replacement can offer the following benefits over traditional hip replacement:

  • Accurate placement of the hip implant using the surgeon-controlled robotic arm system, reducing the likelihood of hip dislocation
  • More consistency in leg length, potentially decreasing the need for a shoe lift
  • Decreased risk of the implant and bone abnormally rubbing together, improving the lifetime of the implant

Persona IQ Smart Knee Implant

Saint Anne's Hospital was also the first hospital in New England to offer the Persona IQ “Smart Knee” implant for total knee replacement. Introduced in 2022, the Smart Knee includes a sensor that enhances a patient’s recovery by giving the surgeon and patient valuable information about activity level and quality of movement after surgery.
