Interested in an Externship?

We follow the Audiology Clinical Education Network deadlines for externship applications.

If you are interested in an externship, please email Elizabeth Clegg, who will advise regarding application requirements, at [email protected].

At Brown University Health, our supervisors are committed to fostering a comfortable learning environment where students feel supported in reaching their goals and establishing clinical proficiency. To ensure proper training of our supervising audiologists, all student supervisors hold ASHA certification. In addition to ASHA certification, our two primary student supervisors also hold the Audiology Preceptor (CH-AP) certification offered by the American Academy of Audiology.

Brown University Health serves a diverse group of patients from varying backgrounds. Students will have the opportunity to work with pediatric and adult patients in an outpatient clinic, hospital, and inpatient setting. In addition to standard audiology services (hearing assessments and hearing aids), we also provide many specialty services including auditory brainstem responses testing, vestibular assessment, bone-anchored hearing devices, cochlear implants, and central auditory processing disorder evaluations. Brown University Health is the only pediatric cochlear implant program in the state of Rhode Island, and students will have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary pediatric cochlear implant team meetings with otolaryngologists, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, geneticists, and neurodevelopmental pediatricians. We are also the only site offering sedated auditory brainstem response testing in Rhode Island.

Graduate Students

Externship (Fourth-Year Students)

We are pleased to offer a fourth-year externship opportunity to one student each year. Externs have the opportunity to gain exposure and/or experience with all clinical experiences listed above. Our goal as supervisors is to ensure students refine emerging and/or established skills in audiometric testing and hearing aid fitting and troubleshooting. Students will have the opportunity to identify areas of particular interest, and our supervisors work to tailor schedules to reflect a student’s interest. Our providers follow evidence-based practice to ensure optimal patient care and work closely with students to strengthen critical thinking and analytic skills needed to develop skilled clinicians. Our fourth-year externship is a one-year placement. At this time, there is no stipend available to students.

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND)

Graduate students can apply to the LEND program at Hasbro Children's. One of our department speech-language pathologists serves as a LEND faculty member and a mentor to accepted students.

We follow the Audiology Clinical Education Network deadlines for externship applications. If you are interested in an externship, please email Elizabeth Clegg, who will advise regarding application requirements, at [email protected].

Clinical Rotation (Second- and Third-Year Students)

We are pleased to offer semester-long clinical rotations for second- and third-year students from programs across the country. Students participating in a clinical rotation at our site will have the opportunity to gain exposure and/or experience with most of the clinical experiences listed above.

Undergraduate Students

Internship

Undergraduate students looking for an opportunity to gain further insight into the field of audiology through observation are invited to consider a semester-long internship. Students will have the opportunity to observe a variety of audiology appointments and learn about the wide variety of services audiologists provide to patients. In addition to observation, interns also assist with clinic initiatives, projects, and small audiology-centered administrative tasks.

Single-Day Observation

For students interested in learning more about audiology before taking on the commitment of a semester-long internship, single-day observation opportunities are available.

If you are a student or graduate who is interested in securing a placement at our site or a single-day observation opportunity, please send an email to our student coordinator, Elizabeth Clegg, at [email protected]. Please indicate the type of experience you are seeking and the timeframe in which you are seeking placement.

Any students seeking a graduate placement or undergraduate internship must have a contract on file between Brown University Health and their academic institution prior to starting their clinical experience. If a contract is not already on file, Brown Health and your academic institution will need to complete a contract prior to your start date.
