Vasectomy Reversal Services from Brown Health Medical Group Urology

A growing number of men are going to their urologists for vasectomy reversals. Fortunately, reversal can be successful, even many years after the original vasectomy. Microsurgical advances are now resulting in improved pregnancy rates.

Gabriella Avellino, MD, a fellowship-trained microsurgeon with Brown Health Medical Group Urology, specializes in vasectomy reversal procedures and provides care for men throughout New England.

Surgical Technique and Procedure

Brown Health Medical Group Urology uses a microsurgical, three-layer technique using microscopic sutures and the latest microsurgical equipment and reconstructive techniques to place sutures precisely. A vasectomy reversal – either a vasovasostomy or an epididymovasostomy – is an outpatient procedure that takes typically approximately three hours.

Post-operative follow-up includes an initial evaluation of wound healing around 10 to 14 days after surgery, and a semen analysis at six to eight weeks.

Factors That Affect Success

The success of a vasectomy reversal depends on the skill of the surgeon and the findings during the surgery. During the procedure, fluid from the vas deferens is examined to determine whether sperm is present. The quality of the fluid (clear and watery, versus thick and pasty) and the presence of sperm help guide expectations for success.
