Vasectomy Reversal: Instructions for Patients
Before Surgery
- Stop eating and drinking by midnight before your surgery.
- You may take medications with small sips of water on the day of the procedure.
- Arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure.
- Discontinue using anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and other pain killers,10 days before the procedure.
- There is no need to shave prior to surgery.
- Please arrive on time on the day of the surgery.
After Surgery
Follow up includes a wound check within seven to 14 days and a semen analysis at 6 to 10 weeks.
Afterwards, semen analyses will be obtained every six weeks for approximately four to six months or until the semen analysis stabilizes. If the semen quality is less than expected due to early scarring, anti-inflammatory medications are often used to minimize scarring.
- Prescriptions for pain medication will be provided.
- Apply an ice pack to the scrotal area for the first 48 hours.
- Wear an athletic supporter or supportive underwear for 7 to 10 days.
- You may shower after 48 hours. Avoid baths for 10 days.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be used as needed.
- Sexual activity can resume two to three weeks after the procedure.
- Avoid strenuous work for two weeks.
- Sutures usually dissolve in three to four weeks.
- Remove bandages after 48 hours.
- A semen analysis will be ordered 6 to 10 weeks after your surgery.
Swelling and bruising of the scrotum following the vasectomy reversal procedure are normal and may extend to the penis. Moderate swelling is expected. Contact your surgeon if you experience severe swelling or increasing pain after surgery.
