Integrative Therapy
Integrative therapy is a holistic approach to complement patient care. The therapies provided may assist with:
- Decreasing stress and anxiety
- Decreasing sensation of pain
- Promoting better sleep
- Reducing fatigue
- Supporting overall wellbeing
These complimentary therapy techniques include:
- Massage Therapy: A light to medium pressure to soothe tension in the muscles and promote relaxation. Massage is limited to scalp, shoulders/back, hands and feet.
- Reiki: During times of illness, grief and stress, the body’s energy can become unbalanced. Reiki is a simple energy technique that is done with gentle to no touch to restore optimal energy flow.
- Guided Imagery: The use of words and music to promote positive imaginary scenarios to improve mental and physical well-being.
- Breathing Techniques: Bringing awareness to the act of one’s breathing to enhance flow of oxygen and provide relaxation.
- Meditation: Mental exercises that focus on calming the mind and creating acceptance of thoughts that do arrive.
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation: A process of focusing on muscle groups individually to create a greater relaxation response.
- Light Therapy: A simple device that provides artificial sunlight to help balance sleep/wake cycles that can be disrupted in the hospital and improve mood. If you are interested, please notify your nurse.

Spiritual Care
- A chapel is always open for meditation and prayer. It is located on the first floor, near the emergency department.
- There are chaplains on staff at Miriam hospital who provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones. The staff chaplains serve patients with diverse religions, cultures, and spiritual practices, as well as those who don’t identify with any spiritual or religious tradition. As a result, our staff chaplains take a multi-faith approach to spiritual care, emphasizing the individual needs of those we serve.
- Chaplains are on-site Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On-call chaplains are available nights and weekends for emergencies.
- If you would like a spiritual care visit, please call 401-793-5654 (internally dial extension 3-5654). For emergencies, please ask your nurse or unit secretary to page the on-call multi-faith chaplain.
- A Catholic chaplain is available for sacraments and can be contacted through your nurse or the unit secretary.
- Out of respect for our Jewish patients, to receive a kosher diet, please indicate this to your nurse upon admission.
