Integrative Therapy
Upon clinical evaluation by your medical provider or registered nurse, integrative therapy services can be ordered as a part of your care plan. The Integrative therapy provider uses a "whole person" approach and creates a tailored plan, in conjunction with traditional healthcare methods, to bring about comfort and healing during hospitalization. Therapies may assist with decreasing stress and anxiety, promoting better sleep, reducing fatigue, and supporting overall well-being.
Based on the patient's needs, the tailored plan may include:
- Massage Therapy: A light-to-medium pressure massage to soothe tension in the muscles and promote relaxation. Massages are offered on hands, feet, scalp, or back, and not near any surgical sites or injuries.
- Reiki: A simple Japanese energy balancing technique that is done with a gentle touch or no touch to improve the flow of "ki" or "life force energy." Patients often report a decrease in pain, improved sleep, a feeling of calmness, and an overall sense of well-being.
- Guided Imagery and Meditation: The use of words and music to evoke positive imaginary scenarios to improve mental and physical well-being. Meditation exercises focus on calming the mind and creating more positive thoughts and emotions.
- Breathing Techniques: Breathing techniques that improve oxygenation and create a sense of mental clarity and calmness.
- Companionship and Emotional Support: An integrative therapy provider is a great person to talk with, be it about your hospitalization or anything else that is on your mind. You lead the conversation.
Clinical Social Work Services
- Social workers (masters and bachelors level) are available for crisis intervention, helping you and your family cope with your illness as well as referrals to community resources.

- Social work services are available complimentary to our patients and their families.
Spiritual Care
- A chapel is always open for meditation and prayer. It is located on the first floor, near the emergency department.
- There are chaplains on staff at Miriam hospital who provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones. The staff chaplains serve patients with diverse religions, cultures, and spiritual practices, as well as those who don’t identify with any spiritual or religious tradition. As a result, our staff chaplains take a multi-faith approach to spiritual care, emphasizing the individual needs of those we serve.
- Chaplains are on-site Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On-call chaplains are available nights and weekends for emergencies.
- If you would like a spiritual care visit, please call 401-793-5654 (internally dial extension 3-5654). For emergencies, please ask your nurse or unit secretary to page the on-call multi-faith chaplain.
- A Catholic chaplain is available for sacraments and can be contacted through your nurse or the unit secretary.
- Out of respect for our Jewish patients, to receive a kosher diet, please indicate this to your nurse upon admission.
