Flynn Pediatric Oncology Nursing Fellowship

Purpose

The Flynn Pediatric Oncology Nursing Fellowship program is intended to help stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of potential pediatric oncology nurses. The program is focused on the critically important field of oncology nursing. The fellowship will enhance the student’s core clinical education through direct involvement with oncology patient care, expert training in compassionate care, and exposure to related patient care duties and services that typify oncology nurses’ valuable role and important relationships with other members of the healthcare team. Opportunities to attend various pertinent internal educational programs and meetings with key staff members at Hasbro Children’s will provide additional learning experiences for the student nurse.

Program Scope

The fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of direct observational and learning experiences, including exposure to:

  • Inpatient and outpatient pediatric oncology nursing (roles/responsibilities, applied practice, professional development and career opportunities, and more)
  • Medical and surgical pediatric oncology (treatment plans, key policies/procedures, patient education, and more)
  • Clinical research and clinical trials
  • Infusion services
  • Palliative care (organization, resources, services)
  • Patient education and support programs

In addition, as part of this learning/development experience and in collaboration with the program managers, the student nurse will be required to complete an evidence‐based practice research project related to pediatric oncology nursing. The project presentation will take place at the graduation ceremony at the completion of the program to Hasbro Children’s nursing staff and various other attendees.

Program Schedule

The program will span eight (8) weeks, from June 2, 2025 through July 25, 2025 and will be conducted at Hasbro Children’s (Providence, RI). The schedule will include 36 hours per week; the daily schedule may vary during the week to allow for diverse clinical experiences.

Compensation

The student nurse will be paid a competitive stipend for this fellowship program.
