Who We Are
The Fetal Treatment Program of New England is the first and largest fetal treatment program in the region, and the only one in the country to teach fetal medicine as a specialty to undergraduate and medical students. We serve as a national referral center for congenital diaphragmatic hernia and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), with patients coming to us for treatment from all parts of New England and as far away as North Dakota, Minnesota, Georgia and Louisiana.
We have extensive experience in the treatment of multiple gestations, including twins, triplets and quadruplets. Since 2000, our program has evaluated, triaged or treated patients with severe TTTS, and we are the only program in the country to have participated in the Eurofoetus trial — the first ever, randomized fetal surgery study for the treatment of TTTS.
Our program has performed numerous treatments in utero, such as cord occlusion for twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence in acardiac twin pregnancies and, ex utero intrapartum treatment for congenital fetal airway obstruction. Since 2008, the program has performed endoscopic fetal tracheal occlusion for severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia. We are the first program — and one of only two — in the country with FDA approval to perform this highly specialized surgical procedure.
