Youth Programs at the Community Health Institute
The Community Health Institute has a variety of programs to reach out to the youth of our community.

Mentoring Program
This program facilitates one-on-one relationships between health professionals and high school students to bolster essential skills in the academic, professional, and social domains. We recruits Brown University Health employees to serve as mentors, who make a commitment to meet at least monthly with their mentee for two years. Partner schools are Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex, Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Charter High School, Paul Cuffee Upper School, all located in Providence and Rogers High School in Newport.

Power Lunch
Brown University Health employees volunteer to mentor and read with a student at the Martin Luther King Elementary school in Providence during their lunch hour. Power Lunch strives to promote enthusiasm for literature, build listening and vocabulary skills, increase attention and concentration, provide positive role models for Providence youth, build self-esteem and confidence, and enhance imagination and independent thinking. Job Shadow Day
Fifth grade students from the Martin Luther King elementary school spend a half-day at The Miriam Hospital learning about health careers by touring departments like the robotics lab, central sterilization, and the blood center. Students also spend time learning about the hospital’s services through interactive stations including hand-hygiene machines, CPR demonstrations, and diabetic vision simulator goggles.
