Patient Support Specialist Training Program

Workforce Development offers a free eight-week program designed to provide training for those ages 18 and older who are interested in non-clinical support roles in a healthcare setting.

Participants complete their classroom instruction with the Community College of Rhode Island and receive work-readiness training and hands-on learning.

After completion of this program, participants are eligible for roles throughout the Brown University Health system, including:

• Unit/medical secretary
• Patient/outpatient service representative
• Administrative assistant 

Students will learn:

• Microsoft Office and typing skills
• Organization and scheduling tools
• Healthcare history, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance and ethics
• Communication, customer service and mock calls
• Safety, infection control and technology
• Social determinants, insurance and terminology
• Math, finances and medical office skills
