Pediatric Pathology

The Division of Pediatric Pathology offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services, with a focus on pediatric gastrointestinal pathology and pediatric oncology. These services include expertise in solid tumors (e.g., neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma, sarcoma) as well as hematologic malignancies (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplasia).

Staffed by three pediatric pathologists with diverse expertise, the division provides primary diagnostic and consultative services, along with daily educational activities for residents and fellows. This includes pediatric gastroenterology and hematology/oncology fellows, as well as a perinatal fellowship in collaboration with Women and Infants Hospital. The division also collaborates closely with the Molecular Pathology Laboratory at Rhode Island Hospital to identify diagnostic and therapeutic molecular genetic abnormalities in pediatric tumors.

Services offered include:

  • Diagnostic interpretation and reporting for Hasbro Children’s Hospital and The Miriam, Rhode Island, and Newport hospitals.
  • Specialized in-house tests, including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and molecular genetic testing.
  • Intraoperative consultative services for pediatric surgery.
  • Second-opinion consultation services.
  • Comprehensive pediatric autopsy services.
  • Participation in regularly scheduled pediatric tumor boards.
  • Teaching sessions for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University medical students, residents, and fellows.
