Dermatopathology

Brown University Health offers a full array of cutaneous pathology services through its Division of Dermatopathology. Its experienced staff is committed to providing high quality diagnostic assessment of cutaneous neoplasms and inflammatory conditions in both adults and children.

Unlike many stand-alone dermatopathology labs, the Brown University Health Division of Dermatopathology offers a comprehensive array of on-site ancillary testing and cross-specialty expert consultation. This provides several benefits to its clients:

  1. Use of a single pathology lab for both pathologic evaluation and laboratory testing (e.g., cultures, peripheral blood analysis) minimizes the burden on clients’ office staff and improves efficiency by eliminating the need to route multiple specimens to different labs and complete multiple requisition forms.
  2. Integration of supplementary testing into pathology reporting can improve diagnostic accuracy.
  3. Streamlined and assisted coordination of additional molecular testing.

The division offers:

  • Notification of clinicians about urgent findings, such as a new diagnosis of melanoma.
  • Verbal and clinical image-based consultation available for each case.
  • A state-of-the-art automated immunohistochemistry laboratory, including a wide array of diagnostic and prognostic markers, not limited to common skin diseases.
  • In-house molecular testing, including BRAF mutational analysis and more comprehensive next-generation sequencing panels.
  • On-site direct immunofluorescence studies for the complete work-up of immunobullous diseases, such as bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus, and dermatitis herpetiformis, as well as IgA vasculitis.
  • Full clinical microbiology and hematology labs on-site for the coordinated submission of tissue and/or blood samples for bacterial cultures, viral studies, or flow cytometry in cases of suspected infection or hematologic malignancies.
  • Comprehensive cross-subspecialty expert consultation available in-house. Areas of secondary on-site expertise include soft tissue/sarcomas, hematologic disorders, mucosal (oral, ocular, and genital) conditions, salivary gland tumors, and pediatric pathology.
